Why Artists Should Embrace Giving Away Free Music
In a recent interview with multi-platinum rap artist 50 Cent, he was asked about what he thought about fans all over downloading his music for free on the internet and through file sharing networks. He responded by saying that it was fine with him, because it helped his music spread faster, which was basically extra promotion for him. As a result, it could help him continue to sell out shows all over. Most majorly signed music artists make more money from touring and performing than they do from actual CD sales, anyway, so here we have an artist who clearly sees and understands the business and advantages of letting fans get songs as music downloads. In the meantime, major labels continue to chase kids and waste money instead of turning this technology into a new and profitable model, one in which the music becomes a branding and promotion tool. So while CD sales may be down, the bank accounts of artists who understand the new trend continue to rise and overflow. These are the artists who use their music to sell their brand. Independent artists can benefit from this too if they can get a hold of the concept and learn how to use web 2.0 technologies to market. Coming Soon....The Death & Rebirth of The Music 'Industry'
